Hi. I am considering getting a Spanish Alano, having seen on the web the qualities of this very special breed. When I was in Spain last week I have looked at a pup and show his mother but I am concerned as the mother was very friendly and not cautious at all towards strangers. Nevertheless, a very confident dog... Would someone know how suitable this breed is for guarding a house (garden, two smaller dogs, and a child included).

It's a very good breed to be used to guard something as it was originally bred to guard people's livestock and their houses. It would probably have to be trained but it is very good at guarding! It's temperment is the best you good find and it is very protective of it's owners' so I think if you wanted it for guarding then this breed would be a very good choice!

I just posted all the information that a first time alano owner would need to know before choosing it as a pet. It is in the dog related section called Alano Espanol Information. I have two of them and they are good guard dogs although they are not used for guarding!
